ABOUT HAZEL

Age: ~6 years

Gender: Female

Weight: 55lbs.

Energy Level: High

Overall Drive: Moderate

Location: Pleasant Hill, CA

Overall, Hazel is easy to please. She just wants to be near her person and fetch her ball. Once she gets to know you, she is affectionate and loves to be part of whatever you are doing. If it involves chasing a ball, even better! This girl has some insane ball drive!

Hazel does seem to be carrying some prior trauma, however. She receives pets well but is initially hesitant or fearful. She is very sensitive and will cower or run away from sudden movements and loud noises. Hazel accepts strangers, but is not overly friendly, and does not seek the interaction. With time, she will warm up once she trusts you.

Hazel is accepting of other dogs, but makes her presence known; standing tall, puffed out chest. She has some nerve damage to her tail and is unable to control its movements well which prevents the normal tail signals. She may do fine with a neutral male dog of similar size but can NOT live with another female dog as she is highly dominant. Due to her high prey drive, she also can not live with any small animals. She has only shown possessive behavior when chasing a ball, so careful monitoring with this high value resource is required.

Hazel is potty trained, crate trained (will need secure crate), rides well in the car, and is well-mannered at the vets’ office. She is working on becoming more confident wit loud noises, sudden movements, and swinging arms. She has mastered her basic skills, is working on becoming proficient in more, and only needs firm verbal correction. She is motivated mostly by toys (balls or flirt pole) and praise. Hazel will need a patient handler who can set her up for success with clear boundaries and structure.

Hazel would do best in an active, single animal household. Children over 12 are best given her skittishness around sudden movements noises. If she was allowed to snuggle all night next to her person, she would love that! With her speed, extreme ball, and prey drive, she may do well in Barn Hunt or Lure Coursing. If you are looking for a fun, mature, and active girl, Hazel is your gal!
