Kaia

Spayed Female, Adult, 60-65 lbs

Gets along with cats: unknown

Gets along with kids: yes

Having lived at a highway gas station in Tepic, Mexico for several years(?), I have survived tick diseases, emaciation, dehydration, tooth loss, an untreated ear injury/hematoma, multiple pregnancies, and a full front left leg fracture, I am a courageous survivor who is still learning the amazing joys and comforts of ROLLING IN THE GRASS! TOYS! WALKS! A COZY BED, And BELLYRUBS! I am super-smart and have quickly learned all the house(!) rules… sit, stay, down, leave it, to accept my foster brother, to chill in a crate, to welcome guests into my home with manners, and walk on a loose, and, at times, firm, leash. I still react to strange dogs and, as common to my breed, will never be a dog park dogs playing with those unfamiliar galoots. As long as other dogs give me some walking distance, I’m cool with them—it’s the ones that come close or engage in their own reactivity that I’m still working on. I am rapidly improving however as I am mentally agile, receptive, loyal, and desperately want to please (again, standard behaviors per breed). I prefer to be with people (all types and in all places) but have learned to be a room-mate with my begrudging foster brother even though he growls at me sometimes.

I enjoy hanging out wherever my people are, and savor hugs and cuddles, scritching, learning new tricks and commands, and WOW—playing with toys(!) alone or with my mom. Frankly had no idea what to do with toys until they taught me the joy and satisfaction of eviscerating fluffs, tugging, jumping, chasing, and chewing them!  I’m housebroken, crate-trained, don’t destroy inappropriate objects, don’t bark unnecessarily and figured out how to use the dog doors on my own. I’m always clued into the cues from my foster parents and truly want to have a strong companion bond with someone, something integral to my breed, but that I was denied my whole life.

We have no idea how old I am, the vet in Mexico thought I was 6-8 at first but the three months I have been rehabilitated, loved, cared for, and subsequently moved to the States, I have become healthy and secure and now sometimes act like a puppy!  Vet here says around 5 but my breed often grays early in the muzzle and my teeth tell a confusing story with all the past garbage-eating (again, not my fault—I was doing the best I could).

If you’ve ever seen one of those pitiful desert highway gas station dogs scraping by, eyes begging for compassion, and thought….someone should help her….now is your chance—my foster mom took a chance on me and I’m forever grateful and would love a person or family of my own to love, play with, and look after.
