Yara is 27 pounds of terrier mix that wants nothing more in life than to be petted by a human and go on adventures to sniff things in the wild. While she is a small dog she comes with a giant personality in tow.
If Yara was a human her foster believes she would be a detective or private eye. She uses her nose to sniff everything and stay on the trail. Additionally, she is also extremely smart and will use her intelligence to escape her pen area to come to be next to you if she knows you are in the house still. Yara will do whatever it takes to get your attention to be petted, she will even stop playing with her toys just to come over and get some love. But cuddling is not her thing, it seems to be too restrictive for her #PetsOnlyPlease. If meeting dogs or strangers outside the house, she is very cautious but if they come over to her foster’s house she seems a little better, home turf advantage I guess.
Yara could be a diamond in the rough for someone that is willing to give her the time and proper training. Her foster believes that she would greatly benefit from professional training and obedience, and more socialization enrichment for her as well. She has shown flashes of having a more dominant personality so it might be best for her to have a forever home where she is the only pet and does not have to share humans. During her walks, she will bark at other dogs as a “get away” type of gesture. In her foster home, she does have a small 10-year-old housemate dog that she does fine with on walks but has a short fuse for tolerance while in the home. She has been untested with children, cats, and livestock.
She is house-trained and has not really shown any interest in the trashcans. There have been a couple of times that she has attempted to steal the stray sock dropped from the laundry basket, but nothing destructive. With her lack of vertical height, the idea of counter-surfing might be out of the question unless she can figure out a way to get up there. During her time in foster, she has mastered the Sit command. Other skills that are being diligently worked on are Off, No, and Down in addition to not jumping and redirecting some reactivity to dogs.
Yara would be best in an experienced dog owner home that is active outdoors where she can exercise her nose and hunt drive abilities. She could possibly be a Barn Hunt candidate but needs more socialization before being around other dogs in a competitive environment. If you think you have got what it takes to polish Yara into a bright Princess cut diamond, apply!
