Yara is 27 pounds of terrier mix that wants nothing more in life than to be petted by a human and go on adventures to sniff things in the wild. While she is a small dog she comes with a giant personality in tow.
If Yara was a human her foster believes she would be a detective or private eye. She uses her nose to sniff everything and stay on the trail. Additionally, she is also extremely smart, aims to please, and learns quickly. Yara will do whatever it takes to get your attention to be petted, she will even stop playing with her toys just to come over and get some love. But cuddling is not her thing, it seems to be too restrictive for her #PetsOnlyPlease. If meeting dogs or strangers outside the house, she is can be unsure and cautious so slow introductions are best. Visitors to the home are welcomed a bit faster - home turf advantage I guess!
Yara is a diamond in the rough and just waiting to shine for someone that is willing to give her the time and continued training. She, like any dog will need clear boundaries and structure and taking an obedience class for socialization and mental enrichment will be highly beneficial. She has shown flashes of having a more dominant personality so it might be best for her to have a forever home where she is the only pet. During her walks, she will occasionally bark at other dogs as a “get away” type of gesture, but this has been well managed with her foster. Yara does fine with the older small dog in the foster home while on walks but has a short fuse and low tolerance while in the home. She has been untested with children, cats, and livestock.
She is house-trained and has not really shown any interest in the trashcans. There have been a couple of times that she has attempted to steal the stray sock dropped from the laundry basket, but nothing destructive. With her lack of vertical height, the idea of counter-surfing might be out of the question unless she can figure out a way to get up there. During her time in foster, she has mastered the Sit, Off, and Look commands. Other skills that are being diligently worked on are wait, come, not jumping when excited, and redirecting her reactivity to some dogs.
Yara would do best with experienced handler who active outdoors where she can exercise her nose and hunt drive abilities. With her desire to please, athleticism, and love of using her nose, she could be a candidate for Barn Hunt, nosework, or agility. If you think you have got what it takes to polish Yara into a bright Princess cut diamond, apply!
