Tyra is the most loveable girl that just wants to be near her humans and give them hugs. She is a total sweetheart that does have quite a bit of energy, but not over the top crazy Malinois energy. With her small size and warm heart she would make a perfect dog for most people looking for their first Malinois. Her deformed and non functioning right front leg makes her a special needs dog, but it causes her zero pain and the vet said there is no reason to amputate.
Tyra’s foster said that if she had a human job that she would be a referee since she always is making sure that things around the house are done her way, not at all in a pushy way but more of an “oversight”. While she loves playing tug, rough housing with her fosters other dog and being a total goofy girl, she does have a very nice “off” switch when it is time to relax with her people. Strangers can make her a bit anxious, so slow and calm introductions are best. She will bark at them if they are moving toward her faster than her comfort level allows, but if they do not make eye contact and have a treat or toy in their pocket, she warms up very quickly.
She is fully house trained and crate training is a work in progress. It was a big hurdle in the beginning and still takes lots of practice and reinforcement with fetch and treats but she can now settle in the crate for 2 to 3 hours after some exercise. Some of the skills that Tyra has mastered during her time in foster are Sit, Down, Kennel, Off, and Place. She also knows her name, works for food, and uses the word “yes” as a marker word for praise and learning new skills. If left to her own devices she will counter surf but that is because human food smells way better than dog food #SteakvsKibble.
Tyra’s dream forever home would be one that takes her on field trips to quiet places like camping or just out in nature. She is dog neutral and does not mind other dogs around, in fact she loves playing with her fosters Border Collie that is about the same size as her. She is sensitive to pressure, so training corrections need to be soft and slow with her. Additionally, she has not been around many kids but the ones she has met she enjoys being around as long as they are slow and respectful of her space. While she is two years old, she is still very much a puppy when it comes to play time. Careful monitoring and supervision is needed to ensure her leg doesn’t get caught on anything. She can be shy around new species of animals but has shown zero reactivity towards livestock. Tyra will do best in a moderately active pet home and may enjoy a low level, low-impact sport such as scent work.
So, if you are looking for a #PocketMal that just wants to love on you, cuddle and play with your other dog then Tyra is your girl!
