Opal is the sweetest, most affectionate dog there is. She has the cutest flap to one ear to show her silly side, but her foremost feature is her sweetness. She wants to be near her person and be pet all day every day. In fact, if you have forgotten, her paw will guide you back to her for more of what she craves. With her unknown past, Opal makes it is clear she needs to make up for lost time with her new person. She would be delighted to stay by your side soaking up the attention as long as you allow. With her caring demeanor it makes perfect sense that if she were a human, she would be a therapist, as her goal at the end of the day is to bring you comfort and joy. She wants to be there for you for whatever you need and will always lend a hand (paw) for help when needed.
Coming to Woof with no knowledge of commands or living with a family, it has taken her a bit to know how to do things most dogs do naturally, such as getting in the car or using stairs. It took a while to master sit and down, even now, it can take a minute for her to understand that you are asking her to do something. Her foster has found that focusing on being ultra-positive, giving praise, and using very quick sessions for training works best. Keeping her experiences positive have helped her look forward to future training sessions. When it comes to playing, she learns best with another dog to show her the ropes. She will chase the ball if she has seen the other dog do it a few times and get praise for it, but rarely picks it up to bring it back. Rather, she soaks up the praise and becomes the biggest goof by galloping in the wrong direction and moving her head in all directions! If you rile her up you will see the same reaction and she LOVES engaging in a good game of chase with her person- in the yard or out in the water!
Opal is house and crate trained and does well with almost all situations. In the house, she pays no mind to other dogs or strangers- a guard dog she is not! She will be your shadow on the couch, in the kitchen, well, everywhere. Overall, she remains calm and mellow, unless of course her foster brother’s amp her up and then she will happily join in a quick barking session. If we had to define her every so slight naughty and sneaky side, it would be her love of pulling towels off the bar when you aren’t looking, then happily rolling and rubbing her ears on them. She also helped herself to a bag of chips from a lower cabinet and counter surfed twice. Luckily, she responds well to verbal correction and understands what is expected after a couple times.
When out of the home she is curious on walks, loves the water and soaking up the sunshine. Her favorite activities are flushing birds from bushes, seeking out the neighbors cat and checking every nook and cranny in the rocks to clear the yard of squirrels and chipmunks. Due to her calm nature and as long as her person is there, she is up for anything from visiting a busy café to exploring the wilderness. She seeks attention from calm adult strangers, but may give a warning bark if a loud, rambunctious child runs at her.
Opal is best suited to a calm, cat-free home with or without low-moderate energy dogs and a patient person who will be with her most of the day. She wants someone to show her new things, include her on outings and praise her victories, no matter how small. She is non-competitive and too relaxed for formal activities, but if you are looking for a rock-solid gal to join you on a short hike and then take a snooze on the couch, run, don’t walk to get your application in - Opal is waiting for you!
