Mayday is a doer, not a lover. Not that she won't love you — she will, as she loves all people and dogs — but she doesn't want to loll around on the couch or offer up her tummy for a lazy rub. She wants you to DO something with her. In fact, she demands that you do something. If you are hoping to get more exercise, here is your motivator. With people and with dogs, it's play, play, play, play. Her favorite things are fetch and tug. If you don't have unlimited energy or time, get her a doggy friend. Luckily, she also crates and kennels well, but lots of activity is crucial for a happy life with Mayday.
Although she is constantly on the go, Mayday is not a working candidate because she's not all that determined to find a lost ball. However, she would make a great sports dog. Dock diving (she loves water), agility, Frisbee, nosework, pretty much any activity that could help her expend her energy in fun ways would be great. However, lure-coursing and barn hunt would likely be her little slice of heaven! If she can't be active in ways that you want, she will likely be active in ways you don't want. However, she will settle in quietly with a bone, she sleeps contentedly in a crate all night, and she can be kenneled if you must be away during the day.
Mayday is easy to train, as she is motivated by food and she responds quickly to soft correction. "Drop it" and "heel" are still in progress, but she knows "sit" and "come." She's also very skilled at "chew this up," "dig here," and "run around in the house like a banshee." Seriously, she's very responsive and will just need lots of structure and lots of activity to tire out her body and mind.
Cars, vets, and loud noises are fine for Mayday. Rabbits and cats are great too — er, in a different way. She's a chaser. Therefore, although she has shown absolutely no aggression, she should not live with young children, cats, small dogs, or, least of all, rabbits. If you'd like to get rid of some gofers, Mayday is your girl. She'll also jump up on anything, so if you want her to keep those pesky crows off your roof — okay, off your picnic table — she will happily oblige. She'll also keep you company in your spa if you'd like (or if you are just not paying attention).
For a very active person who wants a dog who can set the pace, Mayday might just be perfect. Engaging and biddable, she's eager to do just about anything you want to do except watch TV.
