Kenzo thinks he is a lapdog, despite his 70-pound frame! He is a loyal companion and partner who wants nothing more than to be beside his handler. He is very sensitive and willing to please, and bonds to those around him quickly. If he were a human, Kenzo would be an apprentice – he is young, curious, and still gaining confidence but is always eager to learn new things.

While Kenzo is affectionate and sweet with those he is familiar with, he is aloof with strangers. He will check in with his handler when a stranger approaches to see how to react but will usually warm up quickly with proper introduction. Kenzo has high prey drive and thus will not be suited for a home with small children or animals. He is very interested in other dogs and gets very excited when he sees them. He needs slow, guided introductions with dogs as well given his shy nature and tendency towards uncertainty but is friendly, submissive, and sweet when allowed to meet others on his own terms. Kenzo rides well in the car, has done well at the veterinarian’s office, and is mostly unfazed by loud noises. He will need a handler comfortable with moderate correction including some redirection when he becomes distracted. Kenzo is working on basic obedience and being calm in his crate during the day.

Kenzo will excel as an active companion to someone who can dedicate time to working with him as he continues to grow and mature. Once he builds trust with his new family, he will likely be a great adventure buddy for someone who is prepared to be a patient, yet firm. Kenzo’s focus and desire to please would make him a great candidate for formal obedience or a water-based sport like dock diving. This student is looking for his perfect teacher – Kenzo is ready to be your protégé!
