If you’re looking for a social, affectionate, intelligent companion, look no further - Hugo will steal your heart. You won’t find a more loving, cuddly pup; he truly thinks he’s a lap dog. Every night he’s the first one in bed so he can score the best cuddle spot and will stay there all night. As long as he can be touching you, all is right in his world!

His affinity for affection is both his best and most challenging quality. He tends to get overly excited to meet any new friend and will quite literally jump for joy at the chance of the encounter. This is a work in progress and will require a patient handler to help him channel his exuberance into focus and waiting calmly. Hugo loves other dogs - running, playing tug and wrestling is how he spends much of the day. He does have moderate prey drive observed towards cats and chickens. Very careful and controlled interactions with firm correction have been successful.

Hugo is potty trained, crate trained, is learning to enjoy car rides, well-mannered at the vets’ office, and unfazed by loud noises. He will need continued work to learn not to chase cars and curb his mild resource guarding of high-value items. He is very food motivated and his love for treats makes him easy to train. He has mastered basic obedience and is working on more advanced skills, focusing and working through distractions. Hugo loves to chew so ensuring he has plenty of options will prevent him from grabbing items not meant for dogs!

Hugo’s ideal home will be looking for an active, social dog to join in on as many adventures as possible. He would be fine with older, dog-savvy children, and would love at least one other dog of similar size to romp with. He is a bit more freight train than ballerina so may not excel in agility, but lower intensity sports such as obedience, rally, or barn hunt may be fun to explore with him.
