Nico is a typical Malinois in every way! He is stunningly handsome, loyal, affectionate, and likes to snuggle. He is also extremely intelligent, assertive, and learns very quickly. His foster says he is by far the smartest dog he’s ever had and if he were a human, he’d likely be Elon Musk’s boss!
Nico loves other dogs and 97% of the people he meets. He has a sweet personality, aims to please, and is enthusiastically outgoing. His devotion to his handler is very apparent and he will happily follow anywhere just to be near his human. Nico can be a bit demanding when he wants attention, so boundaries are needed to ensure he understands appropriate behavior. Always aware of his surroundings, Nico will alert to anything he feels could be dangerous to his human. Redirecting and more confidence building will help him continue to make good choices.
Nico loves other dogs and would likely appreciate a neutral dog of similar size to romp with. His exuberance can be a bit much for smaller dogs, those who don’t share the same play style, or to humans who are not familiar with the breed. Nico has been introduced to sheep and has shown herding tendencies but has not been around other forms of livestock.
Nico is potty trained, crate trained, will now ride quietly in the car, is timid; but well-mannered at the vets’ office, and is not alarmed by loud noises. When he is out and about for walks and training, he is reactive to moving vehicles. He has made great strides in this area but still will need additional training. Nico has learned most all his basic commands with food and praise being his biggest motivators. He is working hard to become proficient in many things and will continue to blossom with a handler dedicated to his success.
Nico is looking for an active home where ideally his person is home most of the day as he truly hates being left alone for long hours. With his desire to please, love of learning, and incredible intelligence, he’d likely enjoy agility, frisbee, or scent work and could even be a potential SAR candidate.
