Meet Cricket, AKA Jiminy, a 3 year old spayed female purebred Belgian Malinois. (Here is her littermate’s pedigree: https://pl.working-dog.com/…/…/Solar-Winds-Hyperdrive-Hotaru ) Cricket is looking for a forever home that will allow her to continue learning dog sports skills. She loves the learning process, and will happily work for both food and toys. She has begun learning how to shape new behaviors and has started learning the foundations for protection sports on a bite wedge.
Cricket is a full littermate to my IPO competition dog, Fly. She stayed with the family that bred the litter until she was over 2.5 years old, and got very limited exposure with no foundations in training. While this means she was essentially a blank slate when she came to stay with me in Newberg, Oregon in September, she has truly blossomed. Her confidence only continues to grow as she has been getting the mental stimulation and exposure to the world that she deserves. While she can be understandably a bit nervous in new environments, she continues to work through any stress for food and offers to engage her handler of her own accord in these new situations. She has a naturally full grip that doesn’t shift even when we have introduced mild forms of pressure in the work (being pet by the helper, etc).
Cricket lived outside on the farm property she was born on. When she came into my care, she had never had a nail trim, never had a bath, and had to learn all about crate training and being indoors. She has taken this massive lifestyle change in stride and sleeps through the night in her crate now. Ideally, she will either be staying in a kennel run when her new family is at work or monitored in some way as she is still learning house dog rules. She can be a bit of a busy body and may invent ways to entertain herself - not always using outlets we humans would like!
Cricket is incredibly sweet by nature, with a definite goofy and playful side. She is fairly handler soft and works mostly with positive reinforcement methods (with very light correction when need be, for example pressure on a flat collar). She absolutely thrives on human interaction and loves nothing more than to snuggle at the end of the day. She has the high energy and easily stimulated reflexes of a typical Malinois, with enough drive to work through stress. She is non reactive to people or animals, and plays well with male dogs who are tolerant and fairly neutral in their play style. She would do well as a single dog or in a home with a male dog. She is not a working dog (Police K9 or military) prospect and probably not a top competition prospect due to her lack of exposure through her most receptive years, but her impressive recovery and natural work ethic show she should absolutely be capable of playing in a variety of sports for fun (obedience, rally, agility, protection sports). She is a good option for a first time Malinois owner, but interested adopters need to have sport goals and working breed experience.
I sincerely considered keeping this girl for myself, despite my three other working breed dogs. She has many of the same endearing traits I love in her sister Fly. Unfortunately, I don’t have the amount of time to devote to her one on one that I believe she deserves. While I’m sure she’s perfectly content with her new lifestyle here, I know there’s someone out there who will be able to give her even more, and I want to find that for her.
