Location: San Joaquin, CA
Asher is dynamite in a tiny package. He is athletic, friendly, always ready for snuggles, butt rubs, and LOVES to play ball – with anyone, at any time. If he were a human, he’d be a professional basketball player. Ash will play ball until you put the balls away and gets so excited, he whines in anticipation of the next throw.
Asher likes to be the center of attention, is a bit bossy, and tends to pick his friends carefully when it comes to other dogs. He prefers interacting with dogs who are calm and easy going after slow, controlled introductions. He does have significant prey drive, so a home free of cats and small children is required. He lives with older kids in his foster home and does just fine.
Asher is working on crate training and becoming proficient in his basic skills. He rides well crated in the car after a bit of protest as he’d likely have his head out the window with his tongue and ears flapping in the breeze. He is shy and lacks confidence at the vets’ office so will need reassurance and plenty of butt scratches to get through his visits. Ash is motivated most by food and play with simple verbal correction being enough to curb unwanted behaviors.
Asher would do best in an active home where he gets lots of walks and even more ball time. He can live with another dog, but one that is calmer and not interested in being top dog but may do best as the king of his house and only animal. He will need a handler that is able to provide plenty of structure, boundaries, and opportunities to expend his physical and mental energy. With his incredible athleticism, compact size, insane ball, and hunt drive, he’d be an excellent candidate for competitive sports that also tap into handler engagement like agility, disc or nosework.
